Crowns Q & A
What are dental crowns?
Dental crowns are often called “caps,” because they fit over the surface of your natural tooth. They are a tooth restoration approach that strengthens and protects your tooth tissue.
Dental crowns are a good treatment option for teeth that are:
- Weak from advanced decay
- Fractured
- Worn down
- Misshapen
- Severely discolored
- Compromised by a large filling
- Weak from multiple dental procedures
Dental crowns are also used as anchors for dental bridges. They also form the visible portion of a dental implant.
What are dental crowns made of?
Several types of materials are availaable for creating your custom dental crown. Each has a set of pros and cons, and Dr. Kasiri works with you to find the best fit for your needs.
Metal
Incredibly durable, metal crowns can also be very cost-effective, depending on the type of material you select. They can be made of gold, platinum, or a base-metal alloy such as nickel-chromium. The main downside of metal crowns is the color, although some people prefer the look of gold or silver crowns.
Porcelain-over-metal
For a great mix of durability and aesthetics, these crowns work well. They have a layer of metal coated with a layer of porcelain, and look very much like natural teeth. However, they can wear down the opposing teeth, and the porcelain can chip over time.
Resin
Resin crowns are among the least expensive, and can be colored to match the shade of your natural teeth. They are not as durable as other material types and wear down more quickly.
Porcelain or ceramic
These crowns offer the most natural appearance, and are virtually indistinguishable from your natural teeth, but are among the most expensive material options.
How are dental crowns placed?
Dr. Kasiri begins by numbing the area to help you stay comfortable. He prepares the tooth by removing a very small portion of enamel to make room for the crown to fit over your tooth tissue. In some cases, a special material is applied to “build up” your tooth surface.
Next, he takes impressions of your teeth and any required imaging to send to the lab. While your new crown is being crafted you may receive a temporary crown.
Once your new crown is ready you’ll return to the office for placement. A local anesthetic ensures that you’re comfortable as Dr. Kasiri carefully checks the color and fit of your crown before cementing it into place.
Dental crowns are a great option for many men and women. If you’d like to explore dental crowns or other restoration options, schedule a consultation with Dr. Kasiri today by calling the office or using the online scheduling feature.
