Orthodontics Q & A
What types of issues can braces correct?
Braces are designed to correct a broad range of alignment and spacing issues, including:
- Overcrowding: when the teeth appear crooked or even become impacted
- Overbites: when the upper teeth extend too far outward
- Underbites: when the upper teeth fall behind the lower teeth when the mouth is closed
- Crossbites: when some of the upper teeth fall behind the lower teeth when the mouth is closed
- Gaps between the teeth
- Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD or TMJ)
Can you avoid "metal mouth" with braces?
Yes, it's now possible to entirely avoid the "metal mouth" look associated with traditional braces. Even conventional metal braces -- the type that is all-metal -- are now lighter, more comfortable, and far less noticeable than they were only 10-20 years ago.
You can get low-profile braces that are virtually invisible. There are also ceramic braces that have clear brackets, or lingual braces that have brackets on the back rather than the front of the teeth. Dr. Kasiri is happy to help you find the teeth straightening option that yields your long-desired results.
How long do you wear braces?
The usual treatment time can be around two years for most patients. However, your total treatment time can be as little as six months or as long as six years. It all depends on your specific issue and how severe the malocclusion is.
Dr. Kasiri can estimate your treatment time before placing the braces on your teeth, but that time can change based on how your teeth respond to treatment. Your total treatment time may end up being shorter than you'd initially thought.
Is a retainer always needed after braces?
Yes, Dr. Kasiri recommends retainers for all patients who wear braces. Retainers are a necessary part of the orthodontic process, as they prevent the teeth from gravitating back to their former positions. Like braces, retainers are now far more lightweight, more comfortable, and less visible than they were in the past.
